How does AI work?
While the details of different AI methods vary, the basic principle revolves around data. AI systems learn and improve by working with large amounts of data, identifying patterns and relationships that humans might miss.
This learning process typically involves algorithms: rules or instructions that guide AI analysis and decision-making. In machine learning, a popular subset of AI, algorithms are trained on labelled or unlabeled data to make predictions or categorise information.
Deep learning, another specialisation, uses multi-layered artificial neural networks to process information, mimicking the structure and function of the human brain. Through continuous learning and adaptation, AI systems become increasingly competent at performing specific tasks, from image recognition to translation.
Types of artificial intelligence
Artificial intelligence can be prepared in various ways according to the stages of development or the actions it performs.
For example, AI development typically has four stages.
- Reactive machines: Limited AI that only responds to different types of stimuli according to preprogrammed rules. It uses no memory and therefore cannot learn from new data. IBM’s Deep Blue, which defeated chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997, was an example of a reactive machine.
- Limited memory: Most modern AIs are considered to have limited memory. They can use memory to improve over time by learning from new data, usually through an artificial neural network or other learning model. Deep learning, a subset of machine learning, is considered a limited memory AI.
- Theory of mind: AI based on theory of mind does not currently exist, but research into its capabilities is ongoing. It describes an AI that can emulate the human mind and has human-like decision-making capabilities, including recognising and remembering emotions and responding to social situations as a human would.
- Self-awareness: A level above theory of mind, self-awareness in AI describes a mythical machine aware of its existence and with human intellectual and emotional capabilities. Like theory of mind, self-awareness in AI does not currently exist.
