Robots combine science, engineering, and technology to design, build, operate, and use programmed machines to copy, replace, or assist humans in performing tasks of varying complexity. These machines are called robots.
Robots have a long past dating back to ancient Greece; the first digitally programmable and controlled robot appeared in the mid-20th century. Robotics quickly took hold in key industries such as automobile manufacturing: the prototypes of spot-welding robots appeared in General Motors factories in 1961. Over the years, robotics has developed increasingly complex machines for various industries.
What are some of the common types of Robots?
The most communal types of robots are:
Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs)
Using sophisticated devices, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) can perform various tasks, including delivering goods, performing security checks, automating inventory, performing rescue operations, harvesting crops, and even space exploration.
Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs)
Automated guided vehicles (AGVs), a type of autonomous mobile robot, are mobile robots that can navigate predefined routes using wires in the ground, radio waves, cameras, magnets, or lasers. These robots have numerous applications, such as transporting heavy materials in factories and warehouses.
Articulated Robots
One of the key features of an articulated robot is its rotational joints, which can range from simple two-joint designs to complex systems composed of multiple joints and interacting materials. An articulated robot is a typical industrial robot resembling a human arm.
Humanoids
A humanoid robot has the shape of a human body. Its specialised design is generally used to mimic human movements and interactions. Humanoid robots often automate tasks, improve efficiency, and save money.
